Over My Shoulder

Abrupt rise of new machine ecology beyond human response time

September 22, 2013

For most Over My Shoulder readers this should be a quick scan, not a deep read. But we all need to familiarize ourselves with this problem. What is suggested is that there is something lurking in the weeds that could end up biting our collective economic ass. Essentially, there are microsecond flash crashes happening all the time, and because the occur on a timescale that is physically impossible for humans to perceive, we don't know about them. Yes, the system self-corrects, in a way that seems sort of vague, at least to this nonprogrammer; but it makes me wonder what else is lurking out there. Again, don't spend a lot of time unless this is an issue of particular significance to you, but be aware.
