The New Warfare: When AI Partners with Cybercrime

Ed D'Agostino | Global Macro Update
May 17, 2024

This might be my most important interview to date.

Much ink has been spilled over TikTok’s threat to national security, by me and others. Karim Hijazi is my guest today on Global Macro Update. While you’ve likely not heard his name before, you should hear what he has to say about cybersecurity and its impact on all of us and the economy at large. Karim explains why the online threats to our national security go well beyond TikTok. They are vast, largely invisible, and ever-present—and AI is only amplifying this.

Karim is an intelligence expert and the founder/CEO of cybersecurity firm Vigilocity. I was introduced to him through Renè Aninao of CORBŪ. He joined Renè’s panel discussion at our Strategic Investment Conference.

In today’s interview, Karim and I discuss how cyberspace has become the primary medium for both spycraft and warfare among advanced nations. Karim says we are in a “new Cold War” that is “even more cold than it was before because it's under the surface in a fairly murky and nebulous and cryptic world that most people just don't understand.” He gives a stream of concrete examples.

You will also hear how cyberattacks produce kinetic damage, why your personal laptop might be a bigger target than you’d think, and where Karim sees investment opportunities developing in the cybersecurity space. This interview illuminates the intersection of geopolitics and markets.
